What’s in your pack?

Pack not meaning your pure bred or rescue dogs.

In this case, what you take with you on the trail.

Next month I hope to be in the wilds of Maine taking a tracking course with Dan Gardoqui http://www.leadwithnature.com/

While I am out exploring the woods often, the impending trek made me reconsider what I carry with me while out with Ruby and Rusty.

Since we only do day trips, mostly 4 to 6 miles, it isn’t really necessary to pack a lot. With my impending tracking course a back pack might be added, mainly to carry snow shoes. Wishful thinking that there will be snow.

My day pack is super comfortable. My 30 year old L.L.Bean pack got chewed by a dog, luckily found this one at Goodwill. Now on it’s third year.

Can I attach snow shoes? Will have to work on that.

I ordered from Cheshire Horse, a Ruffwear pack for Rusty Red. Not sure what I will impose on him. Would love input from those of you who use them.

So here is my inventory;

  • pocket knife.
  • sharp, strong, blade.
  • dollar store magnifying glasses. come with age.
  • My hands get cold easily.
  • heat reflecting blanket. just in case.
  • No idea why this is in there, but if I take it out, I will need it.
  • Pencil.
  • My card.
  • found on mt. pisgah trail. might be of use.
  • Just in case.
  • Handy little covered bowl.
  • Good to have.
  • This works for people, or dogs.
  • I have a bum knee from mounting too many horses.
  • Necessary, organic, dog treats
  • Very helpful.
  • Good for calling dogs, or those cute North Woods law guys.
  • Used to carry a flashlight, then outdoor vitals said this was a better, and “lighter” alternative.
  • You never know when you might need a fork and napkin.
  • Arnica, if I get injured. CM for leg cramps.
  • toilet paper. prefer oak leaves, but just in case.
  • compass. google maps is great IF you have cell service.
  • my lovely hydroflask.

I usually stuff in a cheese wedge and some Trader Joe’s graham crackers for small mtn. hikes. Taller mountains get a peanut butter sandwich and an instant breakfast.
Need to add a small first aid kit. And if venturing further a spare pair of socks, can also sub for mittens if needs be.
